A Last Goodbye

Again I stand within this room,

Silence the only sound;

Then something in the stillness

Makes me turn around.

For an instant you are here again,

A smile lights up your face;

For a heartbeat's worth of moments

The room is touched by grace.

I reach for you, the moment lost,

But a whisper in the gloom

Let's me know you'll always be

Here within this room.

I finger-write your name in dust

On a table at a window

Then rub away the memory

As tears begin to flow.

I close the door and turn the key

Then finger kiss the doorpost.

      It's a last good bye to yesterday

When always was mine ... Almost.
